New Work - Recent Paintings
I have been a nature lover all of my life, and have come to love the desert environment that I live in. In past years I had let what I saw in nature be absorbed, and I would work on ideas for a new works of art, and then later in the studio the subject matter of a painting would very slowly begin to reveal itself.
Lately though, I compose a picture in my mind while I'm actually out for a hike, and then I try to work on it as soon as possible in the studio. That gives these new canvases a sense of immediacy and energy that carries both the image and the emotional impression of what I saw out in nature.
This forces me to surrender much of the tight control that is evident in my more detailed imagery. I am currently venturing away from working as tightly as I have in the past, dropping the use of my airbrushes, and the time consuming taping off of things to paint them with meticulous detail. Painting a canvas with only my paintbrushes is challenging but also a lot more fun to do. It’s the “old fashioned” way of painting without the time consuming illustrative way I have been working in for so many years now. The dual styles that I'm painting in now share common elements of my work, such as strong compositional structure and visual narrative. I’m having fun with the new look. And I hope you enjoy what I come up with, as much as I enjoy doing it.
